Sónar visualizer

In February 2015, Owen Hindley asked me if I’d like to create a visualizer to run along side his ‘Harpa/Pong’ installation. In 2014, Owen and Atli Bollason created a gigantic interactive installation/game of Pong on the side of the Harpa concert hall building in Reykjavik, Iceland. The Harpa building main facades uniquely contain several hundred window lights which can be controlled programmatically and set to any colour.

In 2015, the Pong installation returned for the Sónar festival and this time Owen and Atli were looking for reactive visualizers to accompany the game. The visualizers were fed an audio feed from the concerts taking place inside the building.

My visualizer was called ‘Crash and Burn’ and featured sweeping flames in time to the music, with the occasional (and intentional) ‘blue-screen-of-death’ – when the music got very loud 🙂 It was built in Javascript and took about 3 days to make. It was among 8 visualizers that accompanied Pong.
